It has been about a week and some change since TMZ and DeadSpin.com released tapes of, still-current, Donald Sterling saying some pretty bigoted stuff to his girlfriend, V. Stiviano. Since then, a lot has happened around the world and around the NBA. After a few days of deliberation with the other owners around the league, rookie NBA Commissioner Adam Silver laid down the law by banishing Silver from the NBA for the remainder of his life. Sterling, now 80 years of age and worth about $1.9 Billion Dollars, will likely appeal the lifetime ban. A ban which includes games, practices and just being around the team/NBA in general. To make matters worse for Sterling, he is currently in the midst of another legal battle between his estranged wife Rochelle and current girlfriend, V. Stiviano, who is more than half Sterlings age.
So what does this mean for the Los Angeles, who are currently in the Western Conference semi-finals? For one, the banning of Donald Sterling does not mean that the team does not have an owner, as Mr. Sterling will continue to own the team until he is forced to sell by the other owners. Which is exactly what Commissioner Adam Silver, NBA Owners and seemingly everyone in the world wants to see. Assumming that Sterling is forced to sell his, and it may be some time before he does that, what does it mean for this young Clippers squad? What is means is that for now the NBA will most likely take over the day-to-day basketball operations, much like they have done with the New Orleans Pelicans. And they will continue to do so until a new suitor is found for the Los Angeles based team.
So who is going to buy the Clippers and how much are they going to have to fork over for the team? According to ESPN, Donald Sterling purchased the Clippers back in the early 80’s when they were still known as the San Diego Clippers.

At the time of his purchase, Sterling was a very successful real-estate mogul and purchased the Clippers as another one of his investment for around the tune of $12.5 Million Dollars, a steal at the time. Over the years, Sterling did not invest much his new basketball, but reaped huge profits after he moved the team a few miles north to Los Angeles, in an attempt to maybe dethrone the Lakers of Los Angeles. So back to the question at hand. Who is going to buy the Clippers and more importantly what does it mean for the team?
There has been talk of several potential new owners for the LA team, ranging from Oprah to Floyd Mayweather to even Magic Johnson, former owner of the Lakers and current owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Currently the Clippers are valued at roughly $525 Million Dollars, a far cry from the $12 million they were purchased for some 30 years ago. While there is no clear front-runner for who is going to buy this up-and-coming franchise, it is speculated that the team will be sold for less than market value, in an attempt to, more-or-less, cut Donald Sterling’s losses. One thing is for sure though, there is no room in the NBA for the comments and remarks that he made towards black people and his departure from the league will lead to bigger and better things for the Clippers and the league as a whole.
The Clippers beat the Golden State Warriors last night by a score of 126-121 and will take on the number two seeded Oklahoma City Thunder in Oklahoma City tonight at 7:30 on TNT.
